Area Education Officers have been charged to assist in generating income from the various revenue items under the education sector to boost the internally generated revenue of the state.

Chairman of the Benue Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, Mr. Terzungwe Atser gave the charge on the 18th October during a meeting with Area Education Officers of the twenty three local government areas, Commissioner of Education, Prof .Dennis Tyavya and staff of the ministry held at the ministry’s conference hall in Makurdi.

Mr. Terzungwe Atser disclosed that upon assumption of office as chairman of BIRS, he discovered that tax administration in the state is backward,  adding that he has been meeting with various stakeholders and felt the need to do same in the education ministry in order to improve tax administration in the state.

The BIRS Boss further disclosed that the commission has appointed three different Consultants for the three s
zones of the state,  namely zone A, B and C in order to work with Area Education Officers in revenue collection from different revenue items from all the schools in the state.

The Consultants are Vincent Ityohuna for zone A, Philip Chiga for zone B and Mr. Ngbede for zone C.

Responding, Commissioner of Education in the state, Prof. Dennis Tyavya said it is important for Area Education Officers to know schools that are not registered ,noting that such schools when discovered will be shut down.

While calling on Area Education Officers to work well with the Consultants and give their best approach to boost revenue generation in BIRS , Prof. Tyavya said the commission needs to know all the private schools so as to know how much to expect from the Consultants at the end of the day . He directed the Director of Quality Assurance to come up with a comprehensive list of all schools in the State.

High points of the meeting was the questions and answers session and the introduction of the consultants to the Area Education Officers.
